Governor Jishnu Dev Varma calls for forgiveness and universal friendship

World Friendship Day: A Celebration of Humanity – Governor Jishnu Dev Varma

Mumbai, October 4: Governor Jishnu Dev Varma emphasized that the teachings of Lord Mahavira—truth, non-violence, non-stealing, non-possession, and celibacy—are not merely religious principles but the foundation of a peaceful, just, and humane society. In today’s world, facing conflict, war, intolerance, and division, Lord Mahavira’s message of forgiveness and friendship has become even more relevant. The Governor appealed that the spirit of forgiveness and universal friendship should transcend religious and social boundaries to become a celebration of humanity.

Speaking at the Collective Forgiveness, World Friendship Day, and Jain Ratna Felicitation Ceremony organized by Bharat Jain Mahamandal at Aaradhya Bhakti Park Dome, Ghatkopar (East), Mumbai, the Governor highlighted that Jain philosophy’s doctrine of Anekantavada teaches us that truth has multiple facets. Understanding others’ perspectives, respecting differences, and resolving issues through dialogue are vital steps toward peace.

The festival of forgiveness (Kshamapana) is an opportunity for self-reflection, purification, and strengthening relationships. Accepting one’s mistakes and seeking forgiveness is not a weakness but a symbol of inner strength.
He noted that Jainism’s spirit of friendship extends beyond humanity to encompass compassion and goodwill toward all living beings. By treating every creature as equal, society can move away from violence, exploitation, and hatred. Governor Varma recalled that Lord Mahavira’s tradition of non-violence deeply influenced Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi’s spiritual mentor, Shrimad Rajchandraji, provided significant guidance that shaped his moral and ethical outlook. This, he said, reflects India’s great cultural and civilizational heritage.

Acknowledging the 126-year glorious journey of Bharat Jain Mahamandal, the Governor praised the organization’s role in promoting Jain principles, spiritual values, social unity, and humanitarian service, and extended his best wishes for the success of this important initiative.

On this occasion, Skill Development Minister Mangalprabhat Lodha urged the Jain community to actively participate in the implementation of government schemes. He suggested collective involvement in initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, lake cleanliness, and other central, state, and municipal programs to strengthen coordination between government and society. He further appealed that during drought conditions, the Jain community should extend its service spirit by assisting citizens, farmers, and livestock with essential resources like drinking water, irrigation, and fodder.

In recognition of contributions to social service, industry, and public welfare, the Jain Ratna Awards were presented by Governor Varma to MLA Parag Shah, Sukharaj Nahar, Kailashchand Jain, and Suresh Goyal. Congratulating the awardees, the Governor expressed hope that their work would inspire others toward service and social responsibility.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, MLA Parag Shah, Bharat Jain Mahamandal National President Khyalilal Tated, Shivlal Pokharna, Jain Muni Muniraj Mukt Nilay Vijay, Acharya Sadhvi Shri Yogkshem Prabha, Rashtrasant Gurudev Shri Namramuni, along with Acharyas, saints, monks, and nuns from various Jain traditions were present. Bharat Jain Mahamandal’s National Youth President Bhupesh Kothari expressed gratitude to all attendees.
