Governor distributes Eco Friendly Ganesh Murtis on the eve of Ganeshotsav
Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma distributed eco‑friendly Ganesh murtis to distinguished invitees from diverse fields and social and non governmental organisations on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi at Maharashtra Lok Bhavan, Mumbai on Sunday (13 Sept).
Addressing the gathering, the Governor noted that Indian civilisation has always had a deep and harmonious relationship with nature and the environment. However, in recent years, the people have gradually lost this traditional connect with nature. He expressed happiness that the younger generation is now increasingly recognising these timeless civilisational values.
The Governor said that next year he intends to reach out to a larger number of people and distribute eco-friendly Ganesh murtis to schools, with the aim of creating greater environmental awareness among students from an early age.
He appealed to non-governmental organisations to come forward and support initiatives promoted by Maharashtra Lok Bhavan, including Eco Friendly Ganeshotsav, TB Mukt Maharashtra and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
He also emphasised the need to create greater awareness about the harmful use of plastic and the importance of reducing plastic pollution. The Governor observed that while environmental degradation affects society as a whole, its impact is felt most severely by the poor, workers and other vulnerable sections of society.
Protecting the environment, he said, is therefore not only an ecological responsibility but also an important social responsibility.
